Monocytes can be activated in vitro by cytokines and microbial factors, and differentiate into either classically activated (M1) or alternatively activated macrophages (M2). Importantly, in vivo, macrophages exhibit phenotypic heterogeneity and plasticity during homeostasis and pathogenesis.
