Fig. 2. Mitochondrial unfolded protein response mediates C. elegans immunity. Pathogen infection causes mitochondrial stress and activates mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) in C. elegans. ATFS-1, a key UPRmt regulatory transcription factor, is translocated to the nucleus to induce anti-microbial genes and mitochondrial chaperones. Mitochondrial chaperone HSP-60 directly binds to cytosolic mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK), which up-regulates p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (PMK-1) immune signaling.
